Melissa Campbell is a passionate educator and a practiced saxophonist. She has had experience teaching music to students ranging K-12 and has completed work in the university setting as well. Ms. Campbell holds a Bachelor’s of Music Education degree from Grand Valley State University (Allendale, MI), including a minor in Psychology, recognition of Performance Honors in saxophone, and completion of the Honors College program. Ms. Campbell has enjoyed her time at Hoover High School thus far, and hopes to continue the tradition of excellence that the Hoover Instrumental Music program is honorably known for.
As an educator, Ms. Campbell has rehearsed and educated students at over 20 different schools in the states of Michigan and California. She has taught band, choir, orchestra, and general music to students ranging K-12 for both Grand Rapids Public Schools and the Pasadena Unified School District. Most extensively, Ms. Campbell has worked as an instructional technician with several successful high school marching band programs, including Godwin Heights High School, Kenowa Hills High School, Grandville High School, Marshall Fundamental School, and the Pasadena All-Star Band. Her instruction at Godwin Heights was vital to the continued success of the program, which took back-to-back 1st Place State titles in the Michigan Competing Band Association (MCBA) Flight IV State Championships (2017, 2018). Recently, she assisted with the Pasadena All-Star Band as they prepared for a successful debut performance in the 2022 Tournament of Roses Parade!
As a performer, Melissa Campbell has been an influential member of concert, jazz, pep, and marching bands in both her high school and college careers. Under the direction of Dr. Dan Graser, she performed in a saxophone quartet for four years. This included two Educational Outreach Tours across the state of Michigan, designed to perform and showcase the instrument.
Ms. Campbell also has given two formal saxophone recitals with a varying degree of classical repertoire, which are showcased on her personal YouTube channel.
In the Laker Marching Band, she served as a section leader for three years and volunteered to coach sectionals post-graduation as well. She was also an active member and served on the executive boards for both the Mu Kappa chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi (honorary band service fraternity) and GVSU’s chapter of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). She had a successful term as treasurer of both chapters, followed by one term as President of Kappa Kappa Psi, and is now a proud alumni of both organizations.
